City of Sydney : Building leadership capability in local government

“Building manager capability supports the delivery of the City’s Sustainable Sydney 2030 strategy and our organisational purpose to lead, govern and serve.”

The City of Sydney engaged Dr Connie Henson from Learning Quest in early 2016 to assist with leadership development of 150 senior managers in leading teams through challenges and change by building self-awareness, resilience and brain fitness for self and others.

The City has been taking its managers on a structured leadership development journey over the past six years informed by the City’s Leadership and Management Capability Framework.

“Building manager capability supports the delivery of the City’s Sustainable Sydney 2030 strategy and our organisational purpose to lead, govern and serve,” says Simon Covill, Manager Organisational Capability.

“We involved Connie as part of our development program to facilitate an interactive workshop to support greater understanding of Displays awareness of self and others, which is a key capability in our leadership framework. We believe self-aware managers are more able to adapt, embrace strengths and develop productive, respectful relationships.

“Connie helped us by sharing practical insights into how neuroscience can provide greater understanding of how to utilise self-awareness to improve personal and leadership behaviours and performance.”

Simon says the workshop approach and content connected with managers, which was a key factor in deciding to extend participation to frontline people leaders – 150 team leaders and supervisors.

“The feedback showed what managers and team leaders particularly liked was their ability to use the concepts immediately,” says Simon.

“Connie was able to turn relatively complex concepts into something that is fun, practical, easy to understand and can be applied by leaders at all levels in the workplace.”
